New BMW Sauber ‘a big step forward’BMW Sauber have presented the car they hope will finally put them on the top step of the podium this year, following their strong 2007 showing. The wraps came off the F1.08 at BMW’s Munich facility on Monday, with team principal Mario Theissen declaring it a major advance on its predecessor.
“It includes everything we have learnt and experienced in the first two years - it will be a big step forward again,” said Theissen, who led BMW Sauber to second place in the 2007 constructors’ championship.
The team scored points in every race last season and in the F1.08 Theissen hopes they now have the equipment to challenge the likes of Ferrari and McLaren for 2008 race victories. “We are confident we can turn the battle in front into a battle of more than two teams,” he added.
BMW Sauber are retaining their 2007 race line-up of Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica for the coming season and both the German and the Pole are optimistic of making more podium appearances, perhaps even on the middle step.
“It is generally very difficult to define expectations and make forecasts, but I hope that our plan works out and we are able to win our first race in 2008,” said Heidfeld. “I expect us to move forward in all areas - particularly as far as reliability is concerned - and to learn from our mistakes. This development process is essential in what we’re trying to achieve.”
Kubica added: “I will also be looking to achieve greater consistency in my results during my second full season in Formula One. Retirements and that crash in Canada - which also prevented me from starting in the USA - cost me points in 2007. We all need to take further steps forward in 2008 and make maximum use of every opportunity that presents itself.”
Among the changes on the new BMW machine are significant revisions to the car’s aerodynamics, its rear suspension and its engine packaging. Following Monday’s launch, which will include some demonstration laps by driver Nick Heidfeld inside BMW’s new vehicle delivery centre, the F1.08 will be flown to Valencia in Spain, where it will make its testing debut on Tuesday

- Agensi

yes for the fist time kubica lead..........
Kubica gives BMW Sauber maiden pole in BahrainFelipe Massa has made the running here all weekend, but on Saturday he had to play second fiddle to Robert Kubica as the Pole grabbed the first pole position of his career, and the first for BMW Sauber.
When the chips were down in the final runs of Q3, Lewis Hamilton went to the top with 1m 33.292s for McLaren, but then Kubica banged in 1m 33.096s - even though he said his car was pulling to one side under braking - and when Massa came up short with 1m 33.123s, the dye was set, to the delight of the men from Munich and Hinwil. Their speeds, of course, could owe much to their respective fuel loads, but it was all great theatre.
Behind them, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen just pipped fellow countryman, McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen, for fourth, 1m 33.418s to 1m 33.488s, and again fuel loads may be a factor there.
Nick Heidfeld put his BMW Sauber in sixth place with 1m 33.737s, beating Jarno Trulli who again had the Toyota in the top 10 with 1m 33.994s. Williams faded a little after the speed Nico Rosberg has shown all weekend, but the German will line up eighth with 1m 34.015s. Jenson Button achieved his top 10 target with ninth place and 1m 35.057s for Honda, while Renault’s speed also faded as Fernando Alonso settled for 10th with 1m 35.115s.
Once again conditions were different, with many drivers complaining that the wind was wreaking havoc on their cars’ balance and stability.
Q2 was dominated by Massa, who whirled his Ferrari round in 1m 31.188s to head Kovalainen (1m 31.718s) and Kubica (1m 31.745s). The only driver to improve significantly over his first run time was Heidfeld, who jumped to fourth with 1m 31.909s.
The Q2 fallers this time were Red Bull’s Mark Webber (1m 32.371s), Honda’s Rubens Barrichello (1m 32.508s), Toyota’s Timo Glock (1m 32.528s), Renault’s Nelson Piquet (1m 32.790s), Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Bourdais (1m 32.915s) and Williams’ Kazuki Nakajima (1m 32.943s). They will start the race in positions 11 through 16.
Takuma Sato brought out a brief red flag in Q1 after spinning his Super Aguri in the final corner and walloping it backwards into the pit wall. He parked up just past the pit exit, and the session was stopped while the car was recovered.
The ensuing mad scramble over the final four minutes saw the Japanese driver and team mate Anthony Davidson eliminated, with respective times of 1m 35.725s and 1m 34.140s, together with Red Bull’s David Coulthard (1m 33.433s), Force India’s Giancarlo Fisichella (1m 33.501s), Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel (1m 33.562s) and Force India’ Adrian Sutil (1m 33.845s). Coulthard was particularly unlucky, as 1m 33.415s was sufficient to get Red Bull stablemate Bourdais through into Q2.
This time there were no penalties for inadvertent blocking, after an FIA edict threatened to penalise any driver deemed to be driving unnecessarily slowly. Cars leaving the pits were timed between SC line 2 (the second safety car line, 50 metres before Turn One) and SC line 1 (the second safety car line, after Turn 15), and any car exceeding a time of 1m 39.0s between these points would be deemed to have been driven unnecessarily slowly.

Kimi Raikkonen set the afternoon practice pace in his Ferrari, underlining the pace of the F2008 demonstrated at Istanbul Park this morning by Felipe Massa. The championship leader recorded a best time of1:27.543s, two-tenths off the ultimate pace this morning.
The 90-minute session started damp following some light rain but after some inspection laps early on, Raikkonen was the first to take to the 5.338km circuit with the standard grooved slick tyres

Felipe Massa has claimed his third straight victory at Istanbul Park, taking the chequered flag four seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton in a race of tyre and fuel strategy. Kimi Raikkonen finished in third position to retain his lead at the head of the championship standings. Massa drove a great race, keeping his cool when Hamilton breezed by him to take the race lead. The McLaren driver also had a good race, opting for an unconventional three stop strategy to challenge for the race win and ultimately only lose out to the flying Massa by a small margin. Massa’s victory moves him second in the championship from fourth, tied with Hamilton. The start of the race saw Massa convert his pole into the race lead while Raikkonen lost ground to Robert Kubica. Front-row starter Heikki Kovalainen was the man to lose out as Raikkonen’s front wings caught Kovalainen’s rear tyre forcing the Finn to make an unscheduled stop for a new set of tyres. As Massa and Hamilton pulled away at the front, Raikkonen tailed Kubica but did not make any real impression until the BMW Sauber driver pitted. A string of fast laps from the championship leader saw him regain third position but even then he seemed comfortable with the position and did not continue to push. Hamilton’s third and final stop saw him exit the pits just ahead of the second Ferrari, holding the position to the chequered flag. It was an impressive performance from Hamilton while Raikkonen could - and probably should have pushed to ensure he finished second to his team-mate. It was a pretty lonely race for the BMW Sauber duo as Kubica finished fourth, 17 seconds behind Raikkonen while team-mate Nick Heidfeld made a good start and then picked up another two positions in the first round of stops to finish an equally distant fifth. It was a pretty good result after a tough weekend for the Swiss-based team. Fernando Alonso got the jump on Mark Webber at the start of the race and had a relatively trouble-free run to sixth position in his Renault, ten seconds ahead of the leading Red Bull Renault. For Webber, seventh position was a solid result, with points now in the last four Grand Prix. After a poor showing in qualifying, Nico Rosberg charged hard in the 58-lap Grand Prix to take the final points paying position for Williams Toyota. David Coulthard was ninth in the second Red Bull Renault, crossing the line four seconds behind Rosberg. Jarno Trulli qualified eighth and finished the race tenth after losing ground at the start while Toyota team-mate Timo Glock finished his day 13th. It was not a good race for Honda with Jenson Button finishing 11th a lap down while Rubens Barrichello’s much publicised 257th Grand Prix start yielded a fairly low-key a 14th position. After his first lap incident, Heikki Kovalainen had a busy race working his way back though the order, taking the flag less than a second behind Button and five seconds clear of Glock. Nelson Piquet looked on target for an 11th place finish in his Renault but inexplicably dropped down the order late in the race to finish 15th ahead of Adrian Sutil in the Force India and Sebastian Vettel in the Toro Rosso. For Vettel, 17th position and last at least marks his first race finish of the season. There were three non-finishers, the first being Giancarlo Fisichella who drilled into the back of Kazuki Nakajima into the first turn on the first lap bringing out the only safety car period of the race. Sebastien Bourdais was having a solid run until a mechanical problem sent him and his Toro Rosso sailing into the gravel trap. From the sweeping turns of Istanbul Park, Formula One now heads to the confines of Monte Carlo. Earl ALEXANDER © CAPSIS International

Ferrari will probably change Kimi Raikkonen's engine ahead of the British grand prix in two weeks.
The Finn was lucky to finish Sunday's race at Magny-Cours, after the exhaust for the right-bank of the V8 engine broke off and burned a hole in the bodywork.
Raikkonen, who otherwise would have dominantly won the French Grand Prix, told reporters afterwards that he suffered a loss of power from his engine before it nearly stopped altogether in the closing stages.
The engine was due to be carried over to Silverstone, in accordance with the rule mandating a two-race life for each power plant in formula one.
Team boss Stefano Domenicali told reporters after Sunday's Magny-Cours event: "I think it's a bit ambitious to use (the engine in) another race.
"I don't know yet but I would say it is quite likely," he added.
Raikkonen, who is now five points behind in the championship, will not be penalised for an engine change for the British Grand Prix.
A new rule for this year allows each driver to have one unscheduled engine change without penalty.
